Chapter 13

Alana was really having a moment. She was so in her feelings. Sitting on her couch, eating her favorite strawberry ice cream by Country Farms, and watching the movie Beaches on the Lifetime Television Network, she was just so unhappy. She wanted to pick up the phone, call Piper, and cry, laugh, and just talk a bunch of crap like they always did. Alana knew that getting over their friendship wasn't going to be easy, but this was just ridiculous. While she had become cool with a few of her coworkers and was kind of close with her coworker, Charlene, no one could replace Piper in her life. If she could depend on anyone, without a shadow of a doubt, it would always be Piper.

“Man, I swear I should've never opened my big, fat ass mouth. Shit, what in the hell is wrong with me? Of course she didn't want Christian to know something so devastating had happened to her. But I tried to apologize; I have no idea what else to do. Piper has never been this pissed off at me about anything, ever. Hell, I spoke my peace, and she rejected me. Why can't I do the same thing to her? Why can't I have the same fuck off mentality for her that she has developed for me? Ugh, I hate this feeling. I wish I didn't care,” Alana said in between licking her spoon clean from the sweet, cold treat.

“I wonder how she's doing and if she gave Christian another chance. And Lord knows, I wish we were talking so I could tell her all about this new guy I’ve met. I really need advice on how to proceed with him or if I should proceed with Mr. Fine as hell at all. But more importantly, I just need my friend to be there for me and for me to do the same for her. Speak of the devil.” Alana’s somber mood brightened somewhat when she flipped her vibrating phone over on its back and saw Ricky's name flash across the screen.

Hovering her thumb over the answer button, she started to accept the call but withdrew her finger back as if she'd just been burned by hot grease. After finding out that she'd agreed to accompany him to a black self-made businessman convention next weekend and jazz club later on that night, Alana had sent him an email, respectfully declining, and had been ignoring and avoiding him and his means of contact ever since. She knew that by him being her boss, her little game of hide and seek wasn't going to last long at all. The only reason she'd gotten away with it all this time was because back when he'd asked Alana to be his date, he was on his way out of town for a week long marketing strategies conference. Ricky was scheduled to return in two days, and from the look of things, he wasn't going to take no for an answer.
